There are varieties of tile countertop ideas available that not only provide homeowners with inspiration on how to create a custom tile countertop but also give their home a unique look. You can create a unique and personal countertop with the materials of your choice as an afternoon do-it-yourself project.

Ceramic
Ceramic tile is made of pressed clays and comes in several varieties: smooth glazed, matte, crackled, printed and handpainted. Mosaic tiles are especially unique, as they can create a mural within a your countertop, which can really add color to your room design. Ceramic tile countertops provide good durability and are heat resistant.

Porcelain
Pressed from the dust of porcelain clay, porcelain tiles are fired at a high temperature, making them thick. The color of each tile penetrates through its entirety, rather than just covering the surface of the tile. Because of the thickness and the way color infiltrates, they are extremely durable, and even the color is resistant to everyday wear and tear.

Glass
Glass tiles have the ability to play with light, creating a bright space; many glass tiles are translucent, allowing light to shine directly through them. One big advantage to using glass tiles for countertops and backsplashes is that they do not absorb liquids or odors, making clean up quick and easy.

Stone
Stone countertop tile options range from marble to granite and slate. Engineered stone is composed of quartz, pebbles, polymers and epoxy, creating a high-end appearance. Although stone tiles look gorgeous, there is a downside: Stone is porous, so sealing is required, and stone can crack under heavy weight. In this respect, engineered stone is a better choice than natural stone, because engineered stone is better at resisting heat and stains.
