Once you successfully remove wallpaper, you then have the task of removing the wallpaper paste that remains on the walls. While products made specifically for removing wallpaper paste are available at home improvement stores, many are made with harmful chemicals. There are home remedies for removing wallpaper paste that work just as well.

Dish Detergent
Regular dish detergent and hot water will loosen up any old wallpaper paste still left on the walls. Add the dish detergent to a bucket of hot water. Dip a sponge in the soapy water and use it to apply soap to the walls. Scrub the walls until you do not feel the paste texture. Take a clean sponge and warm water to rinse the scrubbed area. Dry with a rag and then run your hand over the area to be sure the paste is gone.

White Vinegar
White vinegar is useful for cleaning and very versatile. In a bucket, create a solution of equal parts hot water and white vinegar. Wet a sponge with the solution and use it to remove any remaining wallpaper paste. When using vinegar to clean the walls, saturate the area and scrub with a scrub brush until no more wallpaper paste is visible. Vinegar is non-toxic, but it does have a strong smell. Open windows to ventilate the area.

Bleach
Household bleach will remove wallpaper paste from walls. Mix two gallons of hot water with one cup of household bleach. Put the solution in a spray bottle and spray it directly on the wallpaper paste. Use a scrub brush to scrub the area until the paste is gone. Be sure to wear rubber gloves when cleaning with bleach and keep the work area well ventilated.
