How to Flash Linksys Firmware

Kali Winters via L&C Freelancing

Linksys routinely adds new firmware updates to its website to fix security issues, connection issues and general user ability issues with their routers.

Routinely checking for and flashing firmware on your Linksys router ensures your router performs at its optimum capacity. Flashing the firmware requires an Internet connection since you have to download the firmware from the Internet, so doing regular updates prevents the hassle of finding a connection to get the latest update if your router stops working.

The difficulty of this task is Easy.

You will need:
  • Ethernet cable

Step 1:
Access the Linksys website (see Resources). Click on the "Support" hyperlink and select "Linksys" from the drop down menu. Select your model of router from the available list of routers.

Step 2:
Locate the support section and click on the "Downloads" hyperlink. Select your current hardware version from the drop down menu. Click on the "Firmware" hyperlink" and download the firmware update to your computer desktop. If no firmware is available for your router, you cannot flash the router with new firmware.

Step 3:
Plug an Ethernet cable into LAN port number 1 on your Linksys router. Plug the other end of the cable into the Ethernet port of your computer. A tethered connection allows access to the router settings.

Step 4:
Enter "192.168.0.1" into a web address bar and press "Enter" to load the settings login page. The default username and password is "admin." If this does not work, press a paperclip into the reset hole to restore the factory login settings.

Step 5:
Click on the "Administration" hyperlink and then click on the "Firmware Upgrade" hyperlink. Click on "Browse" and locate the firmware you downloaded to your desktop. Select "Update" to flash the router with the newest firmware. Do not unplug your router until it indicates the update is complete.
