How to Clean a Rock-It Air Intake

Kali Winters via L&C Freelancing

If you drive a lot of miles or happen to live in a dusty environment and you've been wondering if it's time to clean the Rock-It air intake filter that you installed last year it may be time to crack open the hood and inspect it.

If you can no longer see the metal fins between the filter mesh or the filter looks overly dirty, it's time to clean it. Being able to clean a high flow filter is one of the benefits of using one. Standard filters must be replaced but a high flow Rock-It intake filter can absolutely be cleaned.

Step 1:
Remove the high flow Rock-It air intake from the intake housing by loosening the band clamp that holds it to the intake tube with a Phillips screw driver. Remove the filter from the vehicle.

Step 2:
Tap filter against the pavement or a solid surface to remove the surface dirt that has accumulated on the outside of the filter. Do not strike the filter against the pavement with excessive force. Repeated gentle taps until the loose dirt stops falling off of the filter will do.

Step 3:
Soak the filter in a filter cleaning solvent for 15 minutes. There are many brands of filter cleaners available from companies like K&N filters and Airaid. The filter should be completely submerged in the cleaner to ensure all of the dirt inside of the filter has the opportunity to break down.

Step 4:
Flush the cleaner from the filter with a garden hose (without a nozzle) from the inside of the filter out. This will push dirt out of the filter and not deeper into the filter. Do not use pressurized water. Doing so could damage the filter. Allow the filter to adequately dry.

Step 5:
Spray the outside of the filter with a filter oil. Do not saturate the filter. It should be sprayed until it is wet to the touch and somewhat tacky. This helps to catch micro dirt that could possibly make its way through the filter. Filter oil can be purchased at the same locations that filter cleaner can be.

Step 6:
Wipe down the filter housing and intake tube with a moist cotton towel to remove any dust or dirt that has accumulated in the housing. Allow the housing and intake tube to dry before replacing the filter. Once the housing is dry reattach the filter to the intake tube using the band clamp and a Phillips screw driver.

TIPS:
  • Instead of waiting for the filter to dry you can blow dry or place it in front of a fan it to speed up the process. However, do not apply any heat to the filter or it may become damaged.
  • Filter oil and cleaner can be purchased in a kit. This is a cost -effective way to purchase these items.
